About Chapman University

1 University Dr  Orange, CA 92866

(714) 997-6815

Chapman University is one of California’s oldest and most respected private universities, offering distinguished undergraduate and graduate degrees in the context of a liberal arts and sciences university. For more than 150 years, Chapman University has served as a symbol of educational access and excellence in the state of California.

Founded as Hesperian College in 1861 in Woodland, California by members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we admitted men and women and people of color from our earliest days. Endowed by the Valencia orange magnate Charles Clarke Chapman, the institution changed its name to Chapman College in 1934, and by 1954 had moved to the former campus of Orange Union High School in Orange, California. The college again extended higher educational access when it began offering classes to military personnel at El Toro Marine Base.

In 1965, Chapman took undergraduate education to the high seas when it began running World Campus Afloat, the program that would eventually become Semester at Sea, a tradition that continues at Chapman through our world-wide study abroad programs.

Since our founding, Chapman has grown into a highly regarded university that attracts high-achieving undergraduate and graduate students from all over the United States, and more than 60 nations around the world.

Our mission statement: To provide personalized education of distinction that leads to inquiring, ethical and productive lives as global citizens.

Gonzaga University

About Gonzaga University

502 E Boone Ave, Spokane, WA 99202

(509) 328-4220

Gonzaga College started in 1881 with $936 in hard silver dollars. It bought Gonzaga’s founder, Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J., 320 acres of land and water, what people then referred to as “the old piece of gravel near the falls.” Six years later, the College officially opened the doors of its only building for “young Scholastics, whose ambition it is to become priests.” Exclusively for boys, the College was under the charge of the Jesuit priests. Enrollment for the 1887-88 academic year was 18 boys and young men.

Today, it is known as Gonzaga University, a private, four-year institution of higher education. More than 105 buildings dot the 131-acre campus overlooking the Spokane River. Students include both women and men, who can enroll in a multitude of undergraduate or graduate programs. Enrollment for the 2009-10 academic year was 7,837 students.

A constant throughout the years is Gonzaga’s educational philosophy, based on the centuries-old Ignatian model of educating the whole person – mind, body and spirit. At Gonzaga, students discover how to integrate science and art, faith and reason, action and contemplation. "Cura personalis," or care for the individual, is our guiding theme.

Harvey Mudd College

About Harvey Mudd College

301 Platt Blvd  Claremont, CA 91711

(909) 621-8000

Our name is Mudd, and we're proud of it. We're one of the premier engineering, science and mathematics colleges in the nation. We're also unique because we are a liberal arts college. Aren't engineering, science and mathematics mutually exclusive of the liberal arts? Maybe at some places, but not at HMC.

We educate engineers, scientists and mathematicians who become leaders in their fields and have a clear understanding of the impact their work has on society. That's the big picture.

Mudd offers nine engineering, science and mathematics-based majors, all grounded in a solid core curriculum that includes a healthy dose of humanities and social science courses. Why? Because we know that you don't have to sacrifice your interest in music or art (or anything else) to be good scientists. And because an understanding of history and politics will make us more effective engineers, chemists, lawyers, doctors and human beings. Add to that all of the hands-on experience we get through our high-level research projects and through our world-renowned Clinic Program, and we fearless Mudders go into the world ready for anything.

Not that Mudd's all academics. We're people, too. Longboards get us around campus, the Honor Code gives us freedom and responsibility, pranks keep us laughing, and parties make us famous. So not only do we know how to get things done, we know how to have a good time.

And for all of this, we have Harvey S. Mudd to thank. In the 1950s Mudd, an accomplished mining engineer, wanted to overcome many of the shortcomings of traditional, narrow technical training of his day. Mudd, and his successors who helped establish the college, delivered on his vision in a big way. Not only did they understand the world of science, they understood the people behind it. And today we have Harvey Mudd College, a place created by and for future, forward thinking scientists.

Scientists, sociologists, historians, writers and artists influence each other’s work and often teach courses together.
  • Student Engagement: Pitzer’s unique curriculum allows students the flexibility to direct their own educational and career paths by creating their own majors. In addition, students are active members of college governance - making decisions on everything from academic policies and faculty and staff hiring to public art displays and building design.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Sensitivity for and preservation of the environment is a key value of Pitzer College.  Campus landscaping utilizes drought-resistant, native plants and the College is proud of its many LEED-certified sustainable buildings. Students shape their daily activities, programming and studies to ensure they leave the environment and the world stronger than how they found it. Students interested in environmental issues will find Pitzer an exciting living and learning laboratory.

Community Values

These aspirations for all members of our community are not enforceable requirements but rather ideals that promote ethical practices in a diverse community built upon trust.

  • Community
We come together to live and work in a shared learning environment where every member is valued, respected, and entitled to dignity and honor founded upon the following rights and responsibilities:
  • Diversity
We learn from the rich and complex histories, view points, and life experiences in our community. We value and celebrate the synergy created by our differences and similarities.
  • Dialogue
We support the thoughtful exchange of ideas to increase understanding and awareness, and to work across difference without intimidation. We have the right to be heard and the responsibility to listen. Communication, even at its most vigorous, should be respectful and without the intent to harm.
  • Inquiry
We prize the powerful possibilities of learning and the principles reflected in our educational objectives including our dedication to access and justice, civic involvement and environmental sustainability, and our respect for pluralism, freedom of expression, and the sustained effort necessary for achieving academic excellence.
  • Action
These values are mere words until we practice them. We expect to see them evidenced, hear them named, debate their integrity, and demand change on their behalf. We are committed to the hard work and dedication this will demand.

This is a living document to be revisited annually by the community to affirm and measure its progress; to suggest new aspirations; and to support demands for institutional change. We prize the conversation, and even tension, that may arise from contradictions at the heart of these values, for this is where they first might inspire action.

Pitzer College History

Pitzer College was named for benefactor, noted philanthropist, and orange grower Russell K. Pitzer (1878-1978). Founded in 1963 as the sixth institution of The Claremont Colleges, Pitzer began as a residential liberal arts campus for women with a curricular emphasis in the social and behavioral sciences. Pitzer was the first independent women's college to open in the United States since Bennington College in 1932.

The College began in 1964 with an entering class of 153 students. The founding faculty, students, and staff designed Pitzer as an innovative liberal arts institution. The College's pioneering programs embraced interdisciplinarity in teaching and learning, creative and cooperative classroom experience, and community governance, encouraging every voice to be heard equally and fully.

Pitzer College received accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1965. By 1968, the College's enrollment had grown to some 550 students, and in 1970, Pitzer became co educational with a student population of 618 women and 80 men.

Today, Pitzer enrolls approximately 1,000 students in more than 40 fields of study leading to the bachelor of arts degree. Some of the more popular concentrations are psychology, sociology, political studies, media studies, environmental studies and art.

Students continue to create their own academic programs in close collaboration with faculty advisers. There are no formal lists of requirements at the College; rather, students are guided by a unique set of six educational objectives: Breadth of Knowledge; Understanding in Depth; Critical Thinking, Formal Analysis and Effective Expression; Interdisciplinary Perspective; Intercultural Understanding; and Concern with Social Responsibility and the Ethical Implications of Knowledge and Action.

In keeping with its distinctive heritage, Pitzer remains dedicated to individual growth while building community. Students are expected to engage in community service learning, and the campus is now a leader in sustainability, intercultural understanding and global study and inquiry.

Students of ethnically diverse backgrounds come from all parts of the United States, as well as from nearly 20 other countries to attend Pitzer College. In addition to learning from one another, students are encouraged to participate in one of Pitzer's study abroad and international programs. Pitzer challenges students to develop a set of courses that will expose and engage them with issues from the perspective of at least two cultures and two disciplines. Students are also invited to take advantage of the many other Claremont resources that enrich and strengthen their appreciation of global diversity.

Pomona College

About Pomona College

333 N College Way  Claremont, CA 91711

(909) 621-8000

in the desert landscape that was inland Southern California in 1887, it took audacity to imagine "a college in a garden." Yet far from the ivied halls of the Northeast, Pomona's founders envisioned "a college of the New England type," with small classes, close relationships between students and faculty, and a green jewel of a campus. From that beginning, Pomona has grown to be one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. Located in Claremont, Calif., on a campus where ivy and palm trees coexist under habitually sunny skies, Pomona offers an environment for intellectual development and personal growth that is second to none.

Today, Pomona offers its approximately 1,500 students-evenly divided between men and women-a comprehensive curriculum in the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. With a student-faculty ratio of 8 to 1, students have the opportunity to work closely and collaboratively with professors who are also top scholars in their fields. Students and faculty challenge each other in laboratories, classrooms, and co-curricular activities, and everyone benefits from the energy generated by such an assemblage of sharp and eager minds. Friendships forged among Pomona faculty and students frequently endure far beyond the four years of college.

Few institutions can match Pomona's ability to combine such intimate qualities as an average class size of 15 with such large-scale resources as a two-million-volume library. As the founding member of The Claremont Colleges, a unique consortium of seven independent institutions on adjoining campuses, Pomona offers its students the personal experience of a small, academically superb liberal arts college and the breadth of resources normally associated with major universities.

Students challenge and learn from one another not only in the classroom but also in daily life. On-campus housing is guaranteed, and few students choose to live anywhere else. The extraordinary ethnic and social diversity of its student body gives Pomona a broader mix of backgrounds than just about any comparable educational institution.

Our location-within an hour of the Pacific Ocean, the Mojave Desert, the San Gabriel Mountains and the city of Los Angeles-informs and shapes daily life at the College. There aren't many places in the world where you can ski in the morning, play on the beach in the afternoon, and take in a major league baseball game or an opera at night (not to mention the simple joy of wearing flip-flops in the middle of February). But beyond the recreational and cultural possibilities, our location also adds another dimension to the learning experience, with unequalled opportunities for field study, community involvement and internships.

Scripps College

About Scripps College

1030 Columbia Ave  Claremont, CA 91711

(909) 621-8000

Scripps College is frequently described as one of America's most beautiful college campuses. The successful placement of buildings in a lush garden landscape and the intimate scale of this academic environment have been the setting for Ellen Browning Scripps' "experiment in education" for more than 75 years. In general, the campus plan prepared by Gordon Kaufmann in 1926 has been carefully preserved, with major vistas still linking the central areas and the overall planting schemes devised by Huntsman-Trout still followed. Some newer areas of campus, especially the buildings west of Columbia Avenue acquired in the 1980s, have diverged from the Mediterranean style of architecture popular in Southern California during the 1920-30s, but the newest residence hall on campus—Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Hall— completed in 2000, and the Malott Commons, renovated in 2000, have been designed to be in harmony with the distinctive look of the original campus.

This guide chronicles the development of the Scripps College campus over the last 75 years, quoting from the original 1944 Bulletin (in Scripps green) and updating the information about the College's buildings, grounds, and collections.

University of California

 About University of California:

1111 Franklin St., Oakland, CA 94607

(800) 207-1710

When it first opened its doors in 1869, the University of California had just 10 faculty members and 38 students. Today, the UC system includes more than 220,000 students and more than 170,000 faculty and staff, with more than 1.5 million alumni living and working around the world.

From its inception 20 years after the California Gold Rush, UC faculty and students have looked to cross the horizons of what we know about our selves and our world, and what we can do in it. That was the vision of the pioneers living at the farthest frontiers of the American continent when they created a University for the Golden State. As we chart our course through the 21st century, the University of California is still at the frontier.

UC researchers are pioneers in agriculture, medicine, technology and the environment. Thousands of California jobs, billions of dollars in revenues, and countless everyday household items – from more plentiful fruits and vegetables to compact fluorescent light bulbs – can be traced back to UC discoveries. Similarly, many of the state’s leading businesses have connections to UC. Those companies were either based on technology developed by the university, were founded by our faculty or alumni, or are headed by UC graduates.

UC’s ten campuses at Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara provide exciting environments that foster world-class educational and research opportunities and generate a wide range of benefits and services that touch the lives of Californians every day. more…

Besides world-class classrooms and labs, UC has dozens of museums, concert halls, art galleries, botanical gardens, observatories and marine centers – academic resources but also exciting gathering places for the community. Another half million people benefit from UC Extension’s continuing education courses and from Cooperative Extension’s agricultural advice and educational programs located throughout the state.

UC also manages three U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories. The Lawrence Berkeley laboratory was founded on the Berkeley campus in 1931 as an interdisciplinary research center. Some years later, the Livermore and Los Alamos laboratories were established to serve U.S. defense needs; they continue today in new aspects of that mission, including response to terrorism and homeland defense. With nearly 19,000 employees, the three labs have become unparalleled research and development centers whose programs and activities address national interests and concerns in areas such as energy, environment, and health. more...

UC’s five medical centers support the clinical teaching programs of the University's medical and health sciences schools and handle more than three million patient visits each year. The medical centers provide a full range of health care services in their communities and are sites for the development and testing of new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Collectively, these centers comprise one of the largest health care systems in California. more…

UC is also actively involved in locations beyond its campuses, national labs and medical centers — in places throughout California, around the world and online. More locations…

The University of California is part of your life, every day. From health care to our children’s schools to our communities to the economy to the environment, UC is at the frontiers of our future.
